How we came to be The Walton Zoo

It all began one summer night in June of 1994...
...two years later we married and so began The Walton Zoo.

Our Stay-cation 2010

Due to finances and all the other craziness that is our life, we were unable to make the Family Reunion this year. Instead, we are painting to cover the signs of Loki's cooking along with minimal activities. We went for the first time in 16 years to Design Toscano - have been receiving their magazine for years and finally made it to their store in Arlington Heights. While we were there, we went to Rain Forest Cafe for lunch. This took us right to the top for being awesome parents in our kids' eyes and seemed to make up for not traveling out of state.
All the dogs except our own are gone...seems empty. We do have George, Doc and Lisa's paralyzed cat, who is here for a few days. He doesn't do much and except love people---all cats should be this way!

We have had numerous talks with the kids and I am more convinced then ever that we are making the right choice in schooling them at home. They are so bright and well behaved and most important, they have good hearts. Life is good :)

Happy Birthday, Ally

With all the craziness that is our life, I have definetly sat down lately and seen the many blessings I have in my life. My hubby is the best person for me and I can't imagine life without him by my side. I love my kids for their uniqueness and love the time I have with them. I appreciate my family and close friends for being with me during my journey through life - they make it so much happier too!!
So today is the celebration of the most bestest kind of friend in the world - the kind of friend who has known you FOREVER and still loves ya...I have that kind of friend in Ally. We met lifetimes ago in Daytona Beach, Florida where our parents both had time-share rentals. Every year for a week, we met up and had experiences/memories to last us until we could meet up again. The hubby and I went there on our honeymoon so that helped make it that more special since we could hang out with her. I was in her wedding and am thankful for that memory too!
Ally is everything one would want in a friend - sincere, honest, funnier than should be legally possible, smart, well-read, and a beautiful Southern Belle who loves a good vampire story. My life is better because of her and the friendship we started so many summers ago.
Happy Birthday, Ally! A great many things happened on this day in history but your birth is the most celebrated!!!

Corn on the Cob by Loki

Loki wanted to cook yesterday while we were gone and today is being spent trying to get the smell out of the house. Almost there!

Life at the Zoo

Today was a blessing in disguise. While I will not lie and say cleaning the house after a small kitchen fire was fun, it was done happily because it could have been so much worse.
My dog Loki decided to cook the corn that I left in a plastic bag on the stove. We came home at lunch and found a small fire on the stove under the pile of corn. Several ears of corn were burned to ash and the stove had burned plastic on it. There were husks floating around in the swirl of the ceiling fan - black, burnt pieces everywhere.
Luckily the weight of the corn along with the moisture kept it very minimal. I'm still in shock and the house still smells. But we were very fortunate and feel blessed to have escaped what 'could have been'.

Other than that, it is the usual around here. We have a sick cat who seems to be sick due to stress. LOL, get in line, Mjollnir! Unfortunately, he has been plucking his hair and having behaviorial issues so he may be looking at a form of antianxiety pills to see if we can remedy the situation. Typical - so many places to spend money but the animals are at the top of the list :)

We are back into full swing with schooling and our major studies are Real-Science-4-Kids and Story of the World along with their other subject workbooks. G is doing a seperate unit of wolves. F is in to baking and cooking so I'm all about encouraging that in her! I loves to play and his imagination and sharing abilities wow me. Little F is running - she decided to skip walking- and just loves to love!

We escaped for a mini-vacation at the end of July to WI for the Ren Faire. Had a fabulous time and had tons and tons of family around which made it absolutely perfect! The costumes turned out really well and everyone had a good time and even stayed healthy too!

Heidi needs a forever home

My current foster would be the perfect dog for our family HOWEVER

However, she hates my cat and I think would like to possibly chase and eat him someday soon. If she did not do this, she would be near perfect.

Poor thing was a family dog for 2 years until her family dumped her at the pound for being 'too active' and due to the economy. She was there for a month - barely eating - when she made the transport up north. Heidi has learned nearly every command I've given her and will even 'focus' for me and leave the cat alone...for a small while. Then she is back up to obsessing over him.
Ugh....I don't know what to do....

And so we begin right at the beginning...

I created this blog over a month ago thinking it would be great to show others some of the cool stuff I found on the web (I myself love referrals!) and showcase some of the things we do around here.
Then my commitment fear crept in...I had just given up computer time and was afraid I would be committing myself to something I couldn't get done. And I don't like to leave items on a to-do list for very long. I love the sensation of crossing off an item.
So my cute blog just sat empty with nothing but the springy grass green and blue watermark design I chose. I chose it because when the kids and I were planting flowers earlier this spring, it took me a while to realize my son's favorite flowers were 'the blowy kind' aka the seeds of the dandalion weed perfectly shaped into a ball waiting to be released into the wind kind. And every couple of days I would pop in here and add a picture or an update but I couldn't bring myself to post that first post.
BUT today....I feel so incredibly up (back easement getting restored!) and incredibly down (health insurance will keep me poor forever) that I had to do something...something!
This is my something. I'm going to commit to post on here when I can. Not a big commitment because I can't do that right now but I did that first step.
I am slowly building large portions of my life back up because I got stuck in a moment... Life is good and I think that each year it gets better and I get better at it too.
